We have both been greatly influenced by the book To Transform a City by Eric Swanson and Sam Williams (Zondervan, 2010). In their book, the authors use the phrase “ulterior versus ultimate” to describe common motives in building relationships with others. Ulterior means something is intentionally kept concealed.
