As Jones began to study Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, he made a startling realization. Sanskrit had some words in it that were similar to both Greek and Latin and, amazingly, English. Sanskrit and English? Yes. When Sir William Jones published his research in 1786, it was a ground-breaking book called The Sanskrit Language in which he put forth the theory that Greek, Latin, English, Persian, Sanskrit, and also the Celtic languages plus a few more, all came from an older language that no longer exists.
