The place names that did linger were mainly those that end in chester or caster (that’s an ending that comes from the Latin word for camp). Thus, places such as Gloucester and Winchester are all old Roman encampments which became towns. Also, some towns such as London and a few other early forts kept their former names as well, but, for the most part, it was a complete wipeout.
