According to their account, on Friday, October 20, 1967, the two men were riding in a remote area not far from Bluff Creek, where Jerry Crew had discovered strange footprints in 1958, when they suddenly saw a large, hairy hominid close to a dry riverbed. It apparently saw them, and as Patterson dismounted and began to film, it made its way into dense brush. The two men followed but did not see the creature again, though they did find several footprints.
