“You know, even our hair colour is different.” “What about Granny? You said she used to have red hair like us.” “Well, yes. But if it wasn’t for that I’d be absolutely sure we weren’t related to those other nasty Thorns, and perhaps we aren’t. Maybe this is my formal disowning.” “Stop being paranoid.” Rosemary mock-pouted. “How dare you say that to your mother on the day of her formal disowning.” “Mother!”
Maybe i'm crazy but this doesn't feel like regular mom and daughter chatter... It feels like something you'd hear off Ginny & Georgia, and we all know they ain't regular lol!
“That’s not the only reason,” Rosemary admitted. “I don’t want to sell the house. In fact, I love this place.” “More than you love me?” “Athena!” “What?” “Don’t be ridiculous.” “Don’t you want me to be happy, Mother?”
Athena does, in fact, piss me off. She's so persitent to sell a house to go back to the city for her friends and it's literally like this child is bossing around her mother.
“Alright,” said Athena. “What do we do now?” “How should I know?” Rosemary asked. “You’re the one who was reading about all the séances, remember.” “Oh, yes. That’s right. So, I think we light a candle, with a clear intention in our minds and then hold hands, thinking of the person we want to contact.”
It does annoy me how Rosemary is supposed to be a parent and adult in this book and essentially most the conversations are Athena being the mom and Rosemary is just so scatterbrained. I know this has to be something undiagnosed but these characters are quite aggravating and it feels like a constant spin in circles. So now the main characters are unlikeable and I have nothing to root for.
“Shush, Mum,” Athena scolded. “We only have Granny here for a short time – remember – it uses up lots of her energy. Stop getting so cross and be practical.” “Fine, I’ll hold my tongue,” Rosemary said. Granny stuck her own tongue out at that. “Behave yourself, Granny Thorn!” said Athena. “We can’t have Mum getting wound up again.” Rosemary glared at both of them.
This is what I'm talking about. I guess this is supposed to be funny familial banter but really it's adults being childish and the child in the situation being the adult. It's actually just annoying me. I need some self-regulation or an actual adult around.
