She had to fight the urge to dump her drink on the pretty giggling co-ed, the little ditz laughed at everything he said. She knew he wasn’t that funny, she would know, she lived with him. Hell, he didn’t even tell jokes, so what the hell was so cute? She refused to let the big green monster rear it’s ugly head in front of him though, so she pretended to be asleep instead.
Aisha’s face was buried in Connell’s chest. She was trying to stay awake, but the medication was really taking hold. She mumbled something he couldn’t quite make out, and her eyes slid closed. Connell held her close, his arms wrapped protectively around her. He whispered, “It’s alright darling, I’m here, I’m going to take care of you, just rest.” Ben and Helen exchanged knowing looks and smiled, but said nothing as the drive home continued in silence, other than the whispered words of comfort.
Looking at the caller ID, he scowled. So it’s HIM, Max. Well, this shit is going to come to a screeching halt, RIGHT NOW! he thought grimly.
Connell stood looking down at them, and thought, Jenny, sweetie, I finally realize why you asked us to promise you. You knew. You knew that she would love the children unconditionally. Suddenly he felt goose bumps racing up and down his entire body as he could have swore he heard a sweet voice whisper directly in his ear, “And love you, too……” “Honey, what’s wrong?” Aisha asked, seeing the look on his face. “WELL?“ he said. “Oh shit, here we go again.“ Ben muttered, then turned around, looked up at the stars, and began whistling softly. “I was jess out, massa! I shore-lee is sorry I didn’t call!
His face suddenly took on a grim look that calmed her down instantly..
Biting her lip, she thought, Oops, me and my big mouth!
They told me how sweet you were, and how well behaved you were, too.” she cooed as she reached up and stroked his hair, letting her nails scrape his scalp lightly. It always drove him crazy. “ I just loved hearing stories about you and Ben, and lost track of the time. Sorry.“ Standing on tip toe even higher, she pulled his head down and whispered, “I’ll make it up to you later tonight, I promise.” then nibbled his earlobe.
“Well, I’ll be damned! The great Connell The Lion has been tamed. You had him eating out your hand, can you teach me how to do that?” her friend said.
Well, I AM looking forward to that, but nothing is going to stop me from going after anyone who thinks they can fuck with my family. So, I played along. After all, I didn’t want to disappoint her.”
“Look at this, it turned out just wonderful! Look!" Aisha smiled as she gazed down at the cover. She had received Jenny’s book moments earlier from FedEx. Ben and Helen were all smiles as they looked at it, then quickly retrieved their very own cherished copy from the box. When Aisha had opened the package and lifted her own copy out, she had almost cried with happiness. The publisher had used a picture of her and Jenny together, one she had taken at Folly Beach, South Carolina. It was the last time she and Jenny had been together before her illness.
“Ohhhh Jesus…“ Ben muttered, looking around quickly to make sure there were no sharp instruments in the immediate vicinity. He had visions of helping hide a body in the middle of the night, a body mangled by an axe, or something even worse. And he knew his wife would help her, too. He could hear it now, Helen saying, What happens in the family STAYS in the family!
"Honey,” she interrupted as she turned to face Connell again. “ I know you would never invite this Ho's R Us reject to come here, especially when you got me and our babies.
She giggled and hugged his neck. “Goodie, I’ve missed her! And I bet she brings me another pretty doll!” “Oh, in about…eight months or so you’re going have a new baby doll, all right!” Ben snickered, then cleared his throat and looked at the floor when he saw the look Helen was giving him.
Stay calm, and just talk it out with her… he reminded himself, knowing how stubborn she could be. He would genuinely prefer to do things the easy way, instead of the hard way. Even though his mind was already made up, he was willing to discuss it patiently. “No you’re not, you’re going home with me. There’s no way you’re going to endanger yourself and our child. I WILL NOT allow it.” he said as calmly as he could.
I won’t bother you further, as I realize I’ve upset you enough already. But I just want you to know, as always, I’ll be watching over both you and your children. Amore Sempre Massimo (Love Always Max).
