In time new distinctions would be drawn, between “manual” and “nonmanual” labor, between “hand work” and “head work,” and between “blue-collar” and “white-collar” workers. But all who made a useful contribution to society were defined similarly as workingmen. Because every free American was presumed to work at something and for pay, every free American was to that extent equal.33
