The county courts were the places where the local communities reaffirmed their hierarchical relationships and reconciled their various obligations. The courts acted as clearinghouses for the many credits and debts crisscrossing though the local community. Since the justices were always more interested in people’s relationships than in the letter of the law, they made great efforts to resolve disputes over debts informally or out of court.
