I hop off the chimney and grab onto the raised ledge of the roof, swinging my legs over the side to dangle above the street. Blowing out a breath, I let go and bite my tongue against a yelp as gravity yanks me toward the ground. With a soft thud I drop ungracefully into a merchant’s wagon brimming with hay.
Peeking up through the curly bangs hanging in her hazel eyes, she looks at me as though I’ve just single-handedly eradicated the Plague rather than stolen fabric from a woman not much better off than we are. Like I’m the hero and not the villain.
I’ve fought in battles, initiated interrogations, and conducted torture all while Kitt sat in on countless meetings, devised treaties, and spent his days beside a kinder king than the one I know. His days consisted of education, tutoring, and far more pleasant time spent with the father he loves so much.
It’s interesting to see the difference in the two brothers’ relationships with their father. Does kai resent kittens a little for this? They seem to have a pretty good relationship as brothers so far
My hand clamped around my father’s cold one, holding it while I rocked back and forth, sobs shaking my body. I brushed his brown hair from his eyes, straightened his bloody clothes, whispered about all the memories we shared while begging him to come back to me so we could make more.
Cue me trying not to sob at the nail salon 🤧🤧
I wanna know how old Paedyn was when this happened? She met Adena at age 15 or 16 right? But her description of herself as a little girl makes me think she could’ve been 10 years old or something
But to my surprise, he tips his head back and barks out an authentic laugh, the sound rich like the chocolate I occasionally steal and deep like the Shallows Sea.
“Oh, and darling?” “Paedyn.” “You were right.” He takes another step backward. I huff out a sigh. “I’m not sure I should even listen to what you’re about to say since you didn’t address me by my name, which is—” “Paedyn,” the sound of my name from his lips cuts me off, “the ladies do love me.” And with a wink, he turns and strides out of the alley.
I watch her gaze trail over my shoulder to the door I’m currently blocking. She opens her mouth to say something, drawing my attention to the healing split in her bottom lip. On an impulse I can’t seem to ignore, my fingers catch her chin and lift her face up toward mine. She’s too stunned to move, and I take advantage of it. “I would have thought you could avoid a direct hit like this. Guess you’re not as skilled of a fighter as I thought.” I shrug and tilt her head toward the light, casually examining the angry cut in her lip. Oh, but she’s no longer standing there stunned, still, and

don’t know if you were taught this in the slums, so let me enlighten you. Ilya’s kingdom color is green. Not silver.” I stiffen at the way she spat out the word slums, drawing even Sadie and Braxton from their quiet conversation to cast wary glances around the table. We all seem to be holding our breaths, awaiting Paedyn’s response. And she never seems to disappoint. After taking a slow sip from her glass, she meets Blair’s burning gaze. “Hmm. And did living in the palace teach you how to be a bitch?” Blair snaps.
