“Mark my words, Prince, I will be your undoing.” I lean in, ignoring the knife against my throat as I murmur, “Oh, darling, I look forward to it.”
This girl might be the death of me. Literally.
No. Not something. Someone. Strong arms wrap around me before I feel the rumble of deep laughter coming from the broad chest I slammed into. Large hands are placed firmly on my hips and as my eyes adjust to the darkness, I can just make out the familiar curve of a smirk on Kai’s lips as he looks down at me. “Sloppy footwork, Gray. I’d hate to be your partner on the dance floor.”
jump when Kai steps behind me, ducking his head so his chin nearly rests on my shoulder. “Too stubborn to ask for my help, Gray?” “No,” I say coolly. “Too strong to need it.” His next words are murmured close to my ear. “That’s what I like to hear.” The heat of him vanishes when he steps to the side, gesturing to the trapdoor above with a smile twisting his lips.
“I am more than willing to rip your dresses for you, Gray. To help, of course.” Kitt snorts while Kai smirks. “You only need to ask.”
Her breath hitches and I feel my lips tug upward. When she opens her mouth to tell me off, I pull my hand back slowly, holding an apple in front of her face. “Always feeding you, remember?” She stares at the fruit before snatching it from my hand, huffing in annoyance. And then she smiles, the dazzling action lighting up her face as she rubs the apple on my shirt, right above my heart.
take her in, bloody and straddling me. “If it weren’t for my current situation,” I glance at her fist still posed to strike, “this could be a lot more fun,” I say quietly, looking her up and down before staring into those blue eyes as they widen.
“Oh, darling, as long as you still think I’m pretty, I don’t give a damn what I look like.”
She is the embodiment of a bad decision. The twin of danger and desire. The fine line between deadly and divine. And I can feel myself drowning.
“Remind me to make you smile like that again, when you aren’t dying, and I have all the time in the world to memorize it.”
“Which one of them did this to you?”
“I’m going to ask again. Who did this to you?”
If I am to be her enemy, I want it to be because she loathes herself for wanting me.
She’s so stunning, yet so stubbornly oblivious to how the sunset behind dulls in comparison to the vibrance that is her.
“I didn’t realize you had watched me so closely.” “Watched? Darling, I’ve never stopped.”
“And I’ll save your life again and again, aimlessly hoping you will allow me to stay in it.”
“Oh, darling, my eyes were on the dance floor,” he says casually. “They were on you dancing with my brother.” Then he huffs out a laugh, craning his neck to shake his head at the canopy of leaves above us. “Why do you think I’ve been drinking?”
“Will you forever be the prize I am aimlessly trying to win?” I inhale sharply, staring him down as I say, “Is that all I am to you? A trophy?” A small smile twitches his lips as he shakes his head at me. “Oh, darling, a trophy implies that I won it, earned it, deserve it.” He leans in farther, a certain reverence reflecting in his gaze. “But if I get to have you, it will be because you let me.”
I manage to give him a groggy grin before asking, “Are you going to sleep?” “Oh, darling, I’m already dreaming.”
“I’m a fool.” The smile she gives me is equally amused and alluring. “Only when you’re around me?” “Only for you.”
“I don’t know that I ever lived before laying eyes on the likes of you.”
“Malakai.” His eyes flutter shut; his head falls back, allowing the rain full access to his face. The smile on his lips and the column of his neck make me swallow. His head is still tipped toward the sky, speaking to it as he says, “Only you can make my name sound worth saying.”
“What do you want to call me?” “I want to call you mine.”
