To Mom. Thank you for teaching me how to be a strong woman.
“His is both bigger and better than yours.”
“She was. You call my wife your fiancée again, and I’ll break your face.”
Me: One’s for me. The other’s for Luce. Send it to her office.
Me: Most men give jewelry. –Sebastian: Justice is better. But I’ll send you something pretty, too.
I’ve been kidding myself. None of that is because she’s my wife and I’m feeling what a proper husband should. I care about her. No. Care is too diluted. I think about my brothers—Emmett, Griffin and Grant. Rational men who became completely irrational after meeting their wives. Holy shit. I run a hand over my jaw. I’m in love with her.
“And if you actually manage to fix what you’ve broken, I’ll consider forgiving you.” “Forgiving me?” I repeat half in confusion, half in amusement. Her tone turns dry, like she’s talking to somebody who’s too intellectually challenged to know better. “Obviously things can’t be the same when you hurt someone I regard as a friend, can they? You’ll have a lot of convincing to do.”
“I’m not wearing it for you. I’m wearing it for me, so everyone knows I’m taken.”
“If I tell you to crawl on your knees for me, will you?” “For you?” A corner of his mouth lifts, as though he’s saying, That’s all? “Over the proverbial mile of broken glass.”
“You are worth it, Lucienne Peery. You are the prize. I can do this over and over again until you believe that.”
“This is why.” He dips his head until his forehead touches mine. “I have to stop because you don’t believe I love you.” “It never mattered before,” I rasp. “Because I was too slow to realize I was in love with you.” “But…I don’t have anything to give you.” My words come out in a thin, lost cry. “I don’t want something you have. I want you.” “What happens if I never believe you love me?” I whisper. Even now this feels like a dream. “Never say never, Valkyrie.”
