Every inch of me wants to say no — every inch, but the one inch more powerful than the rest. And its in that inch and in his touch that I come to understand a solitary truth. He doesn’t manipulate my powers, he provokes them. Because he provokes feeling in me. So much feeling. Infinite feeling. Most of it terrible. But not that last inch. Because it’s that inch that feels so wonderful its very existence is in defiance of nature itself.
“I hate you, Adam.” “Good.” A wet laugh chokes him and he releases my hands in favor of grabbing the outsides of my arms and squeezing them. “Hate me, Echo. Because I love the way you hate me. Just so long as you only. Hate. Me.” He pounds the words out, touching my hair, my neck, my back, pulling my hips forward to meet the wall of his body. “You hate anybody else like you hate me, it’ll…” He doesn’t finish. He doesn’t need to. He just grabs my right hand and lays it flat over the X carved into his heart.
