They didn’t have horns on their helmets. That might have been the first thing a teacher ever told me about the Vikings. As far as I recall, the order of events for me was: 1) Not having ever heard of any people called the Vikings; 2) a teacher said, ‘Here is a picture of some Vikings’ and showed me an illustration of some amazing warriors in a dragon boat with horns on their helmets; 3) the teacher said, ‘They didn’t really have horns on their helmets.’ The fact that history remained my favourite subject despite that moment is a real testament to how boring the other lessons were.
