“Don’t let anyone dim your light, Jenny. You’re better than that.”
“You don’t have to, sweetheart. I’ve got you. Open the door for me, okay?”
“I have a feeling Ben would give you anything you wanted and then some, but whatever helps you sleep at night.”
“I’ve been waiting for you since we started teaching, Jenny. Maybe not constantly, but consistently. I always find myself coming back to you.” His eyes drop to our hands, still joined on the table. “It’s always been you.”
“I’m not going to lie and pretend there aren’t any risks here, but I can’t lie and pretend I haven’t wanted you since I met you anymore, either, and now that I’ve kissed you once, I don’t want to go back to a world where I’m not kissing you all the time. Take a chance on me, sweetheart.”
“Okay,” I say slowly. “So, what now?” “Now,” he smiles in return, “you stay. We order takeout. We watch a movie and eat on the couch, and it’s easy, like two old friends becoming lovers should be.”
“And I ordered pizza,” he says, his tone teasing. “I don’t think there are four sexier words in the English language.” His eyebrow raises in challenge. “I bet I could find some.”
“Thanks for sacrificing half your pizza for me,” I say, grabbing a slice of cheese. He stands in place, tilting his head. “Nothing I do for you is a sacrifice.”
“I don’t want to spend another night without you.”
