“Oh, I would betray you a hundredfold,” he said, his voice rising. “I would betray you a thousandfold for her.”
But he whispered her name in his mind. He clung to it as the darkness devoured him.
Dacre didn’t heal their lingering wounds. He didn’t mask their pain and wipe their memories again, forcing them to start anew. He fed them to his monsters.
“Keegan.” It was the only word she could say. Her wife’s name, for within it was everything Marisol loved and dreamt of. It was strength and comfort, safety and wildness. A past and the present and the future.
She was broken by what could have been. By what now would never be.
He, of course, would always let her have the last word,
