While the rest of his friends had long since abandoned their girlfriends and dates, Gibsie hadn’t taken more than three steps away from Claire all night.
Our eyes met, green on green, and he winked at me from across the room. And just like that, I was ruined.
“He’s a free agent, and so am I.” “Like fuck we are.”
“You can’t tell me what to do, Joe,” I growled, feeling a combination of drunk and dizzy. “You don’t own me.” “Well, that’s bad fucking luck on my account, because you sure as shit own me!” Drunk or not, his words hit me like a wrecking ball to the chest. Feeling the air whoosh from my lungs, I glared up at him, feeling a torrent of emotions crashing through me. “Why would you say that to me?” “Because it’s the truth.” “Since when?” “Since I was twelve.”
Because every part of me loved every part of her. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I fucking reveled in all of it. She had my heart in knots and my head spinning.
I followed after her, knowing that this girl was by far my greatest addiction.
but this girl, well, I seemed to do just about anything she asked.
“It’s you,” he repeated gruffly, fingers tightening on my waist. “I pick you. Every single time.”
because that’s what you are to me, Aoife. You’re my whole goddamn world wrapped up in one girl.
“Meh. I’m an addict, you’re a bitch,” he mused, pulling me close. “No relationship is perfect.” I laughed. “It works, though, right?”
Gibsie Gibberson,
“You hurt yourself and that’s the same thing,” I choked out. “Because when you hurt, I hurt. When you burn, I go down in flames with you. We’re entwined, Joe. We’re mirrors. Don’t you get that by now?”
“I’ve loved your daughter for six years,” Joey finally broke his silence by saying. “I can easily love her for another eighteen.”
“I’ll do right by you,” he vowed gruffly. “I swear I will.”
was high that night, but you sent me soaring.”
“And she’s the mother of my kid. So, don’t even think about pulling that card,” he sneered. “Because she wins. Every damn time.”
“Oh, I’m your worst nightmare, bitch,”
“You’ve been one hell of a father, Joey Lynch.”
“You’re never too old to be loved, Joey.”
“I see you, Joey Lynch,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to his cracked and peeling lips. “You can’t hide from me.”
“It’s mine to live, and I plan on living it side by side with her. Because news flash, asshole, that girl is my life. Her and our baby. And if she wants a ring, she’ll get it. And a house, she’ll get that, too. And if the time comes where she wants more kids, then I’ll give them to her. Whatever she wants. Because we’re mirrors. Her and me. We’re aligned. That’s my future, Darren, and if you keep meddling in it, then you won’t be a part of it.”
“Joey love.” Closing the space between us, she pressed her hand to my cheek and smiled up at me. “You being here is all the payment I need.”
“Thanks for my baby, queen. You still take the air clean out of my lungs.”
“I’ve spent a third of my life loving you, Aoife Molloy, and I don’t plan on stopping.”
