I’ve been fighting for so long, I don’t know how to take my finger off the trigger,”
Just let me have one phone call with my girl. Please, Doc. I don’t do begging, but I’ll do it for her.”
“Maybe before they moved on, someone wanted to make sure his first love had a fighting chance with her first love.”
“Congratulations, Joey. You’ve earned yourself a phone call.”
“Hey, stud.” “How’s my queen?”
I memorized your number when I was twelve.”
“I’m coming home to you, Molloy. I promise.”
“My brother’s a dick,” I sneered, glaring across the room at enemy number one. Darren sighed heavily. “Joey.” “What?” I shrugged unapologetically. “You are.”
“You know I’d be dead without her, right?” I declared hoarsely. “This entire conversation wouldn’t be happening because I wouldn’t be here to argue about if it wasn’t for Aoife Molloy.”
“You will never understand how much I owe that girl. How much I fucking worship the ground she walks on!”
What hurts the most is the fact that I stayed, and she still loved you more! And I’m jealous of that. I’m jealous and I’m resentful and I’m so fucking hurt that nothing I ever did was enough for her!
“I would rather shit in my hands and clap.”
“I love your family, Joey,” she cut me off by saying, voice thick with emotion. “Each and every one of you.” She winked. “Especially you.”
“Prove me wrong, Joey.” His voice was thick with emotion as he roughly pulled me into his arms and hugged me tightly. “Prove me wrong, son.” “Don’t worry, Tony.” Swallowing harshly I hugged him back just as tightly. “I will.”
I knew he wasn’t mine, but it didn’t stop my heart from beating for him in a paternal rather than brotherly way.
“Joey love.” Closing the space between us, she pressed her hand to my cheek and smiled up at me. “You being here is all the payment I need.”
“So, you’re back.” “I’m back.” He nudged my shoulder with his. “About fucking time.” “I know, kid.” I nudged him back. “I missed you, too.”
“Nice legs,”
“Are you really here?” “I’m here, queen.”
“I’m going nowhere, okay? Never again. I won’t leave your side.” And then his steady hands were on my cheeks, forcing me to focus on his crystal-clear green eyes. “And I won’t let anything bad happen to you.”
My heart no longer beat for me. For the rest of my days, it would beat entirely for the child in my arms.
For the second time in my life, I was a father. For the first time in my life, I had a child of my own.
“Hey, stud,”
“Hey, queen.”
“Nice everything, Molloy.”
“Six years ago today, I locked eyes on you for the first time, sitting on the wall outside of school, and now we’re sitting here with our son.” Smiling, he leaned in close and kissed me again. “Thanks for my baby, queen. You still take the air clean out of my lungs.”
“It’s my turn, Molloy.” He kissed my hair. “To look after you.”
It was her. It always had been. It always would be. The girl from the wall.
“No wonder that daughter of ours didn’t want me helping her shower. She has that young fella’s name tattooed on her arse!”
“So, where’s your other half?” “Claire-Bear?
“Hi, Johnny.” “Hi, Shannon.”
When Lizzie pushed past me, she offered me a sly wink and nothing else. Not a hello. Not a smile. Not an anything, and I couldn’t have been more grateful to her in this moment.
“I will never take so much as a cent from you. Do you hear me, love? Not a brown brass penny, so put any notions of that out of your head.” “Edel.” Sighing heavily, I rubbed my jaw. “I have to pay you back.” “You already are,” she replied, reaching up to pat my cheek. “By staying clean and going to school.”
