“She clearly lives in that world with him,” I mused, feeling myself smile for the first time in weeks as I watched them.
“Well, that’s bad fucking luck on my account, because you sure as shit own me!”
“I don’t think St. Anthony can help find your missing period, Aoife.”
“Oh, Jesus, that’s his sister? Cap’s obsessed with his sister!”
The only person in our lives that had ever taken the time to dig deeper, to push further, was Molloy.
“Loving your son is effortless,” I cut her off by saying, pushing my damp hair out of my eyes. “It’s getting him to love himself that’s the hard part.”
“Hey, Sexy Legs, I slapped the shit out of your brother just now,” Alec declared, sinking down on the table in front of us. “Hope ya don’t mind.”
“One surprise was quite enough, thanks. Don’t go looking for problems, dammit.”
Well, I don’t really know you that well yet, but I’m feeling like this is a fuck-you kind of moment. So, fuck you.”
“If you happen to see his curly-haired sidekick in your travels, please tell her that her mother said she’s grounded,” Mrs. Biggs called after me.
“Well, hey there, Mrs. Joey the hurler.”
“You can try, but I won’t take it,” he replied calmly. “The fact that you needed it badly enough to come to me in the first place is the scary part.” He stared at me for a long moment before saying, “Lynchy’s in deep, isn’t he?”
“Like I said, I can keep a secret,” he offered with a wink. “I’ve got your back, Mrs. Joey the hurler.”
“Follow me, Joey love. No child leaves my house without a full belly.”
“Oh, Joey love.” Sympathetic brown eyes locked on mine. “Why do I get the feeling that Shannon would say the exact same thing about you?”
“Joe’s the only parent I remember having, so trust me when I tell you that your kid…” He paused to gesture to my stomach before adding, “Is going to have one hell of a father.”
“Especially you.” She smiled down at me. “I think I want you the most.”
“You’re living,” I begrudgingly conceded, allowing her to pull me back over the railing and onto solid ground. “I’m being emotionally blackmailed.” “Hey, whatever keeps your heart ticking,” she replied. “Sorry, not sorry.”
“You should take her to him and watch her work her magic,” Nanny said then, turning to Edel. “Return my grandson’s heart to him, and he’ll start living again.”
“Maybe before they moved on, someone wanted to make sure his first love had a fighting chance with her first love.”
“And I already told you that we’re keeping you.” She chuckled. “Finders keepers, Joey love. You’re mine now.”
And then he opened his eyes and looked at me. And I was done. My heart no longer beat for me. For the rest of my days, it would beat entirely for the child in my arms.
“Thanks for my baby, queen. You still take the air clean out of my lungs.”
“Actually, we decided to name our son after the man who raised the both of us,” I confirmed quietly.
“He’s my brother,” a familiar voice snapped, and I swung around to find Shannon, of all people, standing up to a group of girls
“Is he single?” “You’re not his type.” “What’s his type?” “His girlfriend.” I smirked to myself. Well, this was a turnup for the books.
“Shan,” I acknowledged, watching as Kav pulled the chair out for her—the same chair he’d been guarding like a lion all lunch. “Hi, Johnny.” “Hi, Shannon.”
“That’s her throne,” Gibsie chuckled in my ear. “Nobody but Little Shannon sits next to the king of the jungle—or in our case, the king of Tommen.”
“My it girl,” he purred, arms coming around her as he closed the space between their noses. “My everything girl.” “Claire!” Hughie barked. “Get off his lap. Now.” “Okay, he’s definitely the annoying old bastard always ruining a moment,” Gibsie huffed,
