“He’s not worth it, Joe.” No, but she is.
Pretending that it didn’t hurt me to see her with him was something that I had no choice but to master.
“I’m not afraid of loving a boy,” I told her honestly. “I’m afraid of
losing myself in one.”
“Make sure you do.” She laughed. “Because I’ve put an awful lot of effort into saving you, six.”
“The coaches ripped Joey’s jersey trying to pull him off Paul,” I whispered, leaning in close so we weren’t overheard by any nosy bodies. “I’ve never seen anything like it, Case. It literally took three fully grown men to drag him away.”
“You must have a serious death wish, prick face,” Joey replied as he took a menacing step toward Paul. “Walk the fuck away before you restart something that I’ll be only too happy to finish.”
I would have taken from her something I had no right to have.
“You’re breaking my heart.” Her voice cracked. “You’re killing yourself.”
“If it was anyone else, Molloy. If it was anyone else.” “But it’s me.” “It’s you,” he confirmed.
“My Joseph. My brave, brave boy. Terrible burdens. A cursed cross to carry. But always rising from the ashes. Always getting back up. Always the…protector.”
She blew out a shaky breath and nodded. “Oh, I’ve been sold on you for a long time now, Joey Lynch.”
It didn’t stop me from thinking about Molloy, though. No, she lived rent-free in my head. Same as always.
“The quintessential lost boy.” Her lips grazed mine as she spoke. “Don’t worry, Peter Pan, I’ll be your Wendy.”
She made me weak, this girl. It was insane, but I forgot about things when I was with her. Things like time, school, hurling, home. She even made me forget about him.
“But don’t ever think that I don’t have feelings,” he said, and then pressed a kiss to my mouth. “Because the only time that I allow myself to feel anything is when I’m with you.”
“What have I gotten myself into?” “The best relationship of your life.” She wasn’t wrong there.
“Tell you what, you’ll get your apology when I get my money.”
“I took a chance on that boy, and I’m glad that I did because the man that small boy turned into is a man who I am damn proud of.”
Especially his mother. She was the worst one of all.
“You want to be my friend?” “Is that okay with you?” “Yes.” She nodded uncertainly. “Please.”
“Don’t hate me, Molloy,” Joey mumbled, falling into the passenger seat the moment I let him go to open the car door. “You’re all I have to wake up for in the morning.”
No matter what, I would be right beside him, ready to pull him back to safety. Even if it meant that I lost myself in the process.
“The first time I laid eyes on you, and the first time I understood what it meant to have my heart beating for someone outside of my family.”
guess we’re both too stubborn for running, huh, Molloy?” “Or too in love.”
