I didn’t understand how people could hurt any animals, but especially dogs. They were too good for us. Humans didn’t deserve the love and loyalty dogs gave them.

I was exhausted from running away, and somewhere deep inside the back of my mind, I wondered if this boy was the one to anchor me.

“The truth is always better than a lie,” he shot back with a knowing smile. “More painful, but much more beneficial in the long run.”
