Juan started to lead a small group of a dozen immigrants that he called the comité de refugiados—or CRECE, the Central American Refugee Committee. There wasn’t an office in its early days, so each weekend Juan set up a table in the hallway of the Most Holy Redeemer church, on Diamond Street near the Castro.
