Six years later, a Senate investigation uncovered the nature of Varelli and Vides Casanova’s partnership: together they generated a large body of information, almost all of it fabricated, in which Salvadoran intelligence sources identified members of CISPES as part of international “terrorist support” groups working in the US as agents of a foreign power. These leads became the FBI’s basis for launching deeper investigations.
