Over the summer, Hal was teaching me that I could not assume everybody would interpret gender classification or misclassification as being harmful. He was pushing me to provide more context and articulate why the work mattered. He was also preparing me for the skepticism that others in the computer science community would have. At the same time, I was not doing the work for the computer science community alone, but for those who could find themselves on the wrong side of a label.
