Message Undelivered. The number you are trying to reach is temporarily out of service. Just like that, my already dead heart broke into a million pieces.
“This world is full of monsters, and not all of them look like me. They’re not always so obvious, with large claws and fangs. No, some monsters are hiding in plain sight, pretending to be the heroes,” she seethed. “You’re better off not trusting a single person besides yourself.”
“We would never hurt you, Athena.” Samara was the first one to speak, her eyes full of care, adoration, and sadness.
“It means you are our fated mate, Athena. We were crafted by the stars to belong, mind, body, and soul to you.”
“That’s not real,” I stuttered, taking a single step backward. “Neither are vampires,” Orpheus claimed. “And yet, here we are.”
LAZ: I’d love nothing more. That was a lie. I’d love her more.
“Your pain will always be with you, Athena. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be a beautiful part of you. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth carrying.”
Suddenly, her lips crashed to mine and everything around me exploded into vibrant sounds and colors.
“Shut up,” the woman exclaimed playfully. “Chocolate milk is delicious and you know it.” I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the fact that I was listening to the so-called ‘most dangerous coven of vampires’ joking about chocolate milk.
“I will erase every kiss he ever stole from you. I will wipe away every memory of his selfish hands on your body. I will eclipse his hold on your soul, Athena. Because you are mine. Mine to worship. Mine to command. Mine to protect.”
“Alora was once a member of our coven before she died.” His voice wavered with a thick agony. I sighed, and a brief flash of shock bloomed in my chest. Another member of the coven? Was she my mate too? Did I lose a piece of myself before I even knew it was missing?
“You almost died,” I choked out, and suddenly Silas rearranged himself so he was looking into my face. “I didn’t. I had to survive so I could make it to you.”
“Had a sex dream, had to wake up and take care of business,” he teased, leaning on the railing next to me. “Please refrain from informing me of that ever again,” I replied, nonchalantly, but jealousy was roiling within me. The cup in his hand smelled of blood.
“I want you more than anything I have ever wanted in this existence. I want to sink my fangs into your perfect skin and mark you as mine and mine alone. My body fucking burns for you, Athena.”
“Yes, Oh god, yes,” she cried out, quietly. “The gods aren’t here right now. It’s just you and me.”
“If you’re going to ask me to say goodbye to you, I want you to make me scream it.”
“Goodbye, Orpheus. I wish you every happiness.” I didn’t have the heart to tell her I was leaving my every happiness behind with her. “Goodbye, Athena.”
A dark red brick, sitting amongst the shattered glass, with white painted lettering. ‘Lying Bitch’
“You know what she believed in above everything else?” He asked, his voice an even, low tone, full of hurt. “Family.” He finished before I could respond and I nodded, knowing that. My wife had valued her family more than anything on this Earth. “And here you are about to shatter her family.” I gasped, a painful stab in my heart. “She would be so fucking ashamed of you.”
‘You’re allowed to love again, my chosen. It’s ok.’
“I will wait my turn, I will watch you ride all three of them for hours if that’s what you want. But when it is my turn, you’re mine and mine alone.”
where Samara had made her claim. To my satisfaction, there was still a mark there, evidence of our connection, but it wasn’t a bite mark as I anticipated. Instead, raised white lines formed an outline of hanging wisteria circled my wrist climbing up toward the elbow in a gorgeous fine-line design. Like a white ink tattoo on my skin, the floral pattern was stunning, and so perfectly Samara.
I lifted the hem of my shirt to see Laz’s mark on my hip. Climbing up my upper thigh and just above my hip bone was a white design of the phases of the moon. Changes and exploration. Something new. Laz beamed at me with pride and honor as I stroked the design and felt that connection burn brighter.
Immediately my eye flashed to the lightning strike that spanned the right side of my throat. Starting from the base of my ear to the top of my shoulder, white disjointed lines decorating the surface stared back at me. My fingertips brushed it and Orpheus pushed to the forefront of my mind.
Finally, I pulled at the neck of my shirt, revealing the loosely coiled serpent design that sat just below my left clavicle. Its detailed scales were so intricate. I ran a touch along the snake’s body and suddenly my senses focused on Silas.
She was exactly what we needed. All of us. Orpheus needed someone he got to relax with, someone he trusted enough to take the metaphorical ‘tie’ off around. Laz needed someone who they could tend to, someone they could worship. Samara needed someone to help her heal, someone who could fill the void left by Alora without erasing the memories she left behind. And I needed someone to love me.
