I shivered a little, the reverent tone of his voice seeming to stroke that illicit magic inside me, making the dark and bright snakes of power raise their heads in interest.
“If I told you I love you, Elara,” he said quietly, still holding me fast against him, “would you run?”
I ran my fingers through his hair, and he closed his eyes again, unaware of my pounding heart as I realized a truth. And maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t be so terrible to admit that I was falling in love with him too.
Cerridwen hardly knew me, but she said ‘we’ like my suffering and desires and anxieties were hers; like it mattered to her what happened to me.
“I will kill her,” I said finally, looking up to meet his serpentine eyes. Back to normal now. He must have shifted with the last of his strength. He nodded. “I’ll help.”
