Kuma studied her for a moment, then stepped away. “Good. Because you are Exemplar fucking Sharp. Diamond-eyed, titanium-spined. You don’t take shit from anyone, so don’t take it from yourself, either. You like him. He likes you. I know things are complicated, but give it some real thought, all right? Because that kind of connection? That’s worth paying attention to.”
Tarquin’s cheeks heated. “I beg your pardon?” “Never, ever ‘beg my pardon.’ My god, we’re going to have to give him… reverse etiquette lessons.
She smiled, and reached out to squeeze his arm, letting her hand linger a beat longer than might be friendly. “But I admire you for wanting to find out.” Naira walked on. It took Tarquin a little while to remember how to use his feet.
Hesitant wasn’t a word he’d associate with Naira, but the way she drew out those words was exactly that. “Who won?” Her lashes lowered, and it took him a moment to realize she was taking him in, dragging her gaze slowly over his entire body until she lifted her golden eyes to meet his once more. “I think I’m winning right now.”
“I kept catching glimpses of the real you beneath the exemplar veneer, and I found myself conniving ways to make you break your shell more often. I was desperate for more of you, the real you, and every time I glimpsed your personality it made me hunger for more. It was you, shining from within, that attracted me. Even when you were so furious with me I thought you’d rip me in two.”
“I confess to wanting to strangle you sometimes,” she said, lightening her tone. He gave her a sly smile that heated her core. “Let’s save those experiments for a moment a little more private, shall we?” She blushed, and couldn’t remember the last time she’d done so. “Are you flirting with me in the face of certain peril, my liege?” He leaned closer. “I’ve found it the most advantageous time to flirt with you, Ex. Sharp.”
Tarquin had never believed in anything more than he believed in Naira,
