As one of the initial elven-blooded birthed, Jassyn was bound by the will of the council to sire the children of prominent elven females who clamored for the opportunity to bear offspring since they no longer could reproduce with other pure-blooded elves.
Serenna couldn’t help but smile back, feeling like she’d been reborn into a better place. Already, their lands contained evidence of the inconceivable.
Like watching a vase slip off a counter, Jassyn allowed himself to shatter. Bracing against a surge of grief, talons of despair pried open his ribs, scraping over his heart. Jassyn sank into his misery, letting the gloom swallow him. He dropped his head into his arms, and with an anguished sob tearing free from his chest, a piece of him sundered and slipped away.
Greetings, young draka, hear our plight, New hatchlings from earth and starlight. From distant galaxies did the whelps arrive. They stole our magic and left us deprived. They used five Hearts to bind our power in chains: Earth, Fire, Lightning, Wind, and Rain. The balance of earth, it must be restored. The Hearts must be returned to where they were forged. But the Hearts were hidden by the thieving hands, The cunning ones from otherworldly lands. Bring us the Hearts so we can restore The harmony as we had before the war. Young draka, heed our call, For this balance of nature affects us all.
Jassyn sees through what I’ve let myself be blinded by.
“We’re intertwined,” he said, his fingers warm, unfolding against her. “I felt your presence appear in my mind the night I portaled here. I’m assuming it was because you were untethered for the first time.”
“I know you feel it too,” he whispered in a voice as soft as dreams. “This power when we touch.”
“So please excuse me if my defiance doesn’t live up to your expectations. I’m broken, and all I have left to fight with are the fucking pieces.”
It’s like seeing a kaleidoscope of colors when I’ve been living in black and white. Letting the human side of you feel is nothing to be ashamed of.
Their gazes gravitated together like the inevitable pull the earth had on its moons.
“Whatever this is…” His voice trailed off. The muscles of his jaw strained. “It’s more than a bond to me.”
The prince was an army all on his own. A living weapon.
The weight of the coercion was just as deadly as when King Galaeryn implanted the instruction in his mind decades ago. Lykor lost control to the power.
