If he had any choice in the matter, Jassyn would’ve refused to wear the inked sigils of his four contract holders like he was some prized cattle. And, of course, “Lady” Farine felt the need to brand his head for the world to see. No wonder she produced an offspring as detestable as General Elashor.
As one of the first elven-blooded birthed, Jassyn was bound by the will of the council to sire the children of prominent elven females who clamored for the opportunity to bear offspring since they no longer could reproduce with other pure-blooded males.
Of course, every piece of her jewelry was solid gold. The elves had conditioned the elven-blooded outside Alari to wear the metal to tether their magic well before they would’ve manifested any abilities. Jassyn had to wonder what would happen if the elven-blooded discovered their powers.
“We’re intertwined,” he said, his fingers warm, unfolding against her. “I felt your presence appear in my mind the night I portaled here. I’m assuming it was because you were untethered for the first time.” Serenna inhaled a serrated breath as he gently trailed his hand up her arm, sending comets of magic shooting under her skin. “I know you feel it too,” he whispered in a voice as soft as dreams. “This power when we touch.”
Vesryn interrupted her in a gruff voice. “It’s a bond.” “A bond?” Serenna repeated. Like that was supposed to explain something. “Our…” He grasped at the air as if he were trying to gather the right words. “Essence has the ability to form a connection with another person, linking our Wells, binding us together.”
“We’re done here,” he said, storming off to his office. “I have whoring to do.”
Vesryn’s thought brushed her mind, softer than a feather’s caress gliding across her cheek. I like your human emotions.
It’s like seeing a kaleidoscope of colors when I’ve been living in black and white. Letting the human side of you feel is nothing to be ashamed of. I’m sorry I used that against you.
“What? No.” Serenna’s shrill laugh almost seemed forced. “That’s ridiculous. He’s just waiting for me to learn more about my magic so we both can reject the connection.” Jassyn frowned. That wasn’t his understanding of how the magic functioned.
“You slapped me.” Vesryn wheezed, a chuckle that morphed into gurgling coughs. He gasped and sputtered, “Can you do it again?”
Despite choking on blood, Vesryn laughed. “That slap,” he gurgled through a chortle. Desire pounced on her through the bond. Serenna gasped. Her power guttered, Vesryn’s passion flitting up her spine. She jumped when he anchored a hand to the swell of her hip. He clutched her like a maniac sailing in a squall, taunting the furious tides to tear him away. The prince cackled. Hysterically. He then lowered his voice and commanded, “Slap me again.” Serenna scowled, her fingers itching to do just that. “I’ll slap some sense into you.” Vesryn giggled. “Are you threatening me with a fun time?” He

“I didn’t believe I’d see anything as beautiful as a display like that,” he said, the right side of his mouth tugging fleetingly to flash his dimple. Serenna froze when he cupped her cheek. “That is, until I saw you.”
“I see you already went through the trouble of…resuscitating the prince,” Jassyn said to her. He glanced at the pool of blood, to Vesryn’s bare chest, and then back to her. “Charming.” Disapproval wrinkled his brows. “Am I still needed or…?” “Yes,” Serenna said quickly, a flush racing to the tips of her ears. “No,” Vesryn growled, like a dog possessive over a bone, hands clamping down on her hips. Jassyn rolled his eyes, muttering to the stars to send him strength, but hurried over. Not bothering to skirt the blood, he kneeled beside them while Serenna swiveled off of Vesryn’s lap.
“She’s the one who jumped on me,” Vesryn protested, scowling and rubbing his skin. “I have to say I prefer the princess’s bedside manners over yours, Magus Killjoy.”
“For the record,” Vesryn said, pointing his knife at her, “I tried removing your clothing, but Jassyn wouldn’t allow it.” Jassyn rolled his eyes and stabbed his fork with more force than necessary to spear a carrot. The utensil pinged against the silver plate. “He felt the need to chaperone until you woke up,” Vesryn continued. “I’ll make sure he leaves something for you to eat if you want to get cleaned up first. There’s loungewear for you in the bathing chambers.”
“Whatever this is…” The muscles of his jaw strained. “It’s more than a bond to me.”
