“Why do you do that stuff to your brothers? It’s hilarious, but isn’t it a lot of work?” “Because it reminds everyone not to take life too seriously. It makes us engage with each other.”
I pause inches away and give myself one last chance to change my mind. “What’s the problem?” she whispers, her breath hot on my skin. I smile. “I’m not your type.” “What?” “I’m not an asshole, Sara. And that’s a problem.”
“Well, Foxx was my grandfather’s name—but it only had one x at the end. I wanted to name my first little boy that since I was a little girl, and luckily, Kixx agreed. And because his mother put two x’s at the end for reasons I’ll never know, we put two at the end of Foxx’s.”
I should have noted this in my review of Fluke, but Kixx was only spelled Kix in the first two books Flirt and Fling.
Me: He told me we have 30 days or he’s charging interest. Moss: What the hell? Me: I’m telling Mom. Jess: That’s the most Banks thing you’ve ever said.
“What if one of us falls for the other?” I ask. “Then what?” I stand before her, ready to peel her out of that dress. Somehow, I find a shred of self-restraint and hold on to it for dear life. She smirks. “I’m not going to fall for you, Banks.” I smile back at her. “I was talking about me.”
“But know that when tomorrow rolls around, I’m going to be very, very interested in you. More than I am now.”
“I don’t want this to be it between us. I want this to be a part of it.”
“Whatever you want me to do, all you have to do is ask,” he says, his voice gruff. “You never have to just take what you’re given. Do you know that?”
“If a man doesn’t understand how lucky he is to be able to touch you, don’t let him,” he says, twisting his finger as he withdraws it from me. “But I know, so let me.”
Oh, Sara. I want to hold her and kiss her, but if I do, she’ll stop talking. And as much as I want to heal her wounds, I want her to have the chance to unload them. Give them to me. I’ll carry them for you.
And the pranks that he does to his family? He actually admitted that he does them so they don’t take life too seriously. So they can laugh and do things together.”

“Stay here,” I say softly. “Let me love on you a little bit.” Her eyes widen. My heart smashes against my rib cage, making it hard to hear anything other than the blood pouring through my ears. I’m already in this far. Might as well go all in. “I love you, Sara.”
“I’ve never told another woman I wasn’t related to that I love her,” I say. “But I love you. Completely and absolutely. And I really, truly hope that you don’t push me away.”
“We all do the best we can. Each one of us starts at a different green light in life and we have to get through the course, taking as many correct turns as we can. And none of us, Sara, get every turn right. And we’re not all on the same course, either.”
