The Amazon website began using collaborative filtering as early as 1998 to recommend products for customers to buy. Rather than attempting to measure similar profiles of users to approximate taste, as Ringo did, the system worked by determining which items were likely to be purchased in tandem—a rattle with a baby bottle, for example.
