In March 2016, the Instagram feed began switching from a chronological to an algorithmic arrangement. The change was tested on small groups of users then rolled out to more and more, until it hit everyone. The increasingly out-of-order feed induced a sense of confusion and anxiety akin to the feeling of someone rearranging the furniture in your house without your knowledge. Before, by scrolling through the feed, you were moving back in time. But suddenly, a post from two days ago appeared at the top of your feed.
