Jada Watson, a professor at the University of Ottawa who studies country radio airplay, tried the feature for herself and ended up with a similar result: She went through twelve refreshes of all men. Even though, for research purposes, Watson uses Spotify solely to listen to women artists, she found that “within the first 200 songs (19 refreshes), only 6 songs (3%) by women and 5 (3%) by male-female ensembles were included (all emerging after 121 songs by male artists).”
