Kindle Notes & Highlights
To all those who have known the weight of darkness and still shine. You’re stronger than you know.
Nothing could wake that boy, not even one of my colorful curses that turned Mother’s ears red.
“You can brew a pot of coffee to make it up to me,”
I went about boiling the water over the hearth, the single sunfire sconce
“Have I told you lately that you’re a decent sister?”
“It appears as though my time has run out.”
I should have known better; family was nothing out here, not in the cursed lands.
Each village we visited, we left behind empty voids and broken hearts.
Do not fear the dark It was where we were born And it is where we all shall die
Droplets fell to the ashen stones, Adam’s polished boots covered in crimson splatters.
Adrenaline was better than any drink.
Better than a stolen kiss or a cloudless sky.
I thrived in its decad...

“Never lower your eyes in the face of death,”
“You shouldn’t fear dying, only failure.”
When there wasn’t a choice, all one could do was fight or die.
Of course, my idol was missing from the main gods and goddesses.
Maliah, Goddess of Revenge and Redemption, was a force to be reckoned with, and certainly a hero to many warriors.
He probably had some over-the-top manly name, like Hawk or Steel.
I might be a highly trained fighter, but I still enjoyed a comfortable pillow, and
these accommodations were hardly luxurious.
My life had gone to shit, but at least I’d be clean.

“You tried, even though you knew you’d fail,”
“My attitude? I prefer my dagger!”
She made your heart pound for the first time in years.
“She clearly won’t be able to follow orders, and that’s going to cost lives.
“My private life is not your problem.
She might be impressive, but she’s trouble.”
There was something calming about returning to a routine.
Occasionally, I’d been known to pick up a book,
but I found knives far more entertaining.
Flowers blossomed, blooms of bright red and blue and yellow.
“You seem to attract trouble, recruit.”

“And here I thought you would crack if you smiled. Shame.”
“I’m elated to see you’re not the misogynist pig I pegged you as.”
“I only get humor when it’s actually funny.”
“Some lies should be believed,”
The book I’d been reading. “Don’t let anyone know you have that,”
It was one of two things I had of hers, and I’d been so pissed at her for abandoning me as a child that I’d shoved her book into the shared library.
Tonight, there would be no dreaming of light. I deserved the darkness.
Which you might, because I plan on making you my new best friend.”
