God in his wisdom, to make and keep us humble and to teach us to walk by faith, has hidden from us almost everything that we should like to know about the providential purposes which he is working out in the churches and in our own lives.
the inscrutable God of providence is the wise and gracious God of creation and redemption.
a disposition to confess that he is wise, and to cleave to him and live for him in the light of his Word through thick and thin.
Thus, the kind of wisdom that God waits to give to those who ask him is a wisdom that will bind us to himself, a wisdom that will find expression in a spirit of faith and a life of faithfulness. Let us see to it, then, that our own quest for wisdom takes the form of a quest for these things, and that we do not frustrate the wise purpose of God by neglecting faith and faithfulness in order to pursue a kind of knowledge which in this world it is not given to us to have.
God speaks both to determine our environment and to engage our minds and hearts.
God, our Maker, knows all about us before we say anything (Ps 139:1-4); but we can know nothing about him unless he tells us.

Here, within the compass of these three short chapters, we see the word of God in all the relations in which it stands to the world, and to man within it-on the one hand, fixing man’s circumstances and environment, on the other, commanding man’s obedience, inviting his trust, and opening to him the mind of his Maker. The rest of the Bible sets before us many new utterances of God, but no further categories of relationship between God’s word and his creatures. Instead, the presentation of the word of God in Genesis 1—3 is reiterated and confirmed.

God’s word is his executive instrument in all human affairs.
Always it is stressed that the claim of the word of God upon us is absolute: the word is to be received, trusted and obeyed, because it is the word of God the King.

Every single thing that happens to us expresses God’s love to us, and comes to us for the furthering of God’s purpose for us.
the love of God is free, spontaneous, unevoked, uncaused. God loves people because he has chosen to love them—as Charles Wesley put it, “he hath loved us, he hath loved us, because he would love” (an echo of Deut 7:7-8)—and no reason for his love can be given except his own sovereign good pleasure.
God was happy without humans before they were made; he would have continued happy had he simply destroyed them after they had sinned; but as it is he has set his love upon particular sinners, and this means that, by his own free voluntary choice, he will not know perfect and unmixed happiness again till he has brought every one of them to heaven.
