The Forever War unmistakably is indeed about Vietnam.

I think one of the flaws of framing the argument this way is that The Forever War endures in part because while it is about Vietnam, it's science fictional setting means that it doesn't have to be about Vietnam alone, but can be extended to other wars, too - especially more recent wars whose basis seems largely to be 'the economy needs it!'
