At one point Yahweh even allows tehom to reclaim the cosmos: in the story of Noah and the flood, the waters come not only from above but from below: ‘In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of heaven were opened’ (Genesis 7:11). Thus the flood was not just a flood, but an unmaking, a temporary returning of the earth to its original formless state.
