“It sounded exactly like when you hit a very fat man with a very large fish.” Jason, Humphrey and Clive all turned to look at her.
“Okay, that’s creepy,” Clive said.
“Compared to the subterranean flesh pit we’re standing in?” Sophie asked him. “I guess not,” Clive acknowledged.
“What do you mean by signature unpleasantness?” Jason asked. “Jason,” Sophie said, “your powers make people’s flesh rot and blood leak out like sweat.” “I guess that is relatively unpleasant,” Jason conceded.
ACME Calm-B-Gone,” Neil read. “Why doesn’t it just say frenzy potion? These do the same thing except one looks weird and is labelled wrong.”
“Not your mother?” Sophie asked. “She’s right here where he can find her.” “Emir isn’t stupid enough to do that,” Rufus said. “He’s right here where she can find him.”
“Jason Asano’s saving graces are twofold. One is that if he decides that something is worth doing, he’ll kill himself to get it done if that’s what it takes. He’s literally done that. The other is that when he sets out to do something, it gets done. It doesn’t seem to matter who or what gets in his way, or even if it’s possible in the first place.”
The society was under instruction from Marcus to accept any reasonable request from Jason and most of the unreasonable ones no questions asked.
“I’m sorry,” Miriam Vance cut in. “Did you just say you might turn into a universe? It sounded like you said you might turn into a universe, but that would be an insane thing for a person to say because people don’t turn into universes. I can’t help but feel like I’d be more comfortable with an operations commander who understands that.”
“Sorry, Dad,” Belinda said meekly. “Belinda…” Humphrey admonished. “Are we not meant to call you Daddy?” she asked. “Because Sophie said—”
“Don’t,” Humphrey said in a hollow, trembling voice. “Engaging only makes it worse. It doesn’t stop them, it doesn’t help. Nothing helps.”
“You know, I used to talk about my fancy diamond-rank connections all the time. Knowing you makes it very hard to be a braggart, Jason.”
