North buzzed over and swept its green beam of light over Bjorn. “Threat level: 9.” Eir whooped. “I’m a higher threat level than you. Move over, Bjorn. I’m the new queen of combat.” “What? No. That can’t be right.” Bjorn frowned. “Wait a second. Let me get pumped up.” He rolled his shoulders, dropped to the ground and did a few press ups, leapt back up and bashed a fist against his chest, then cricked his neck. “OK. Scan me again. I’m ready.” “Threat level: 7.” They all burst into laughter. Even Ingrid chuckled.
Iro reached for the button to open the door again. His satchel lifted into the air as if drawn upwards by gravity. It buzzed. “Command Query: Why is North in a bag?”
“We have a game on the Thousand Suns,” Toshiko said as they walked. “One person says a word, then the next person says a word that begins with the same letter the last worded ended on. And no repeating. I’ll go first. Star.” “Rustling,” Iro said. “Groan,” Emil said pointedly.
“Has he ever shown you his crest?” Rollo asked. “I’ve never seen the symbol at the centre. No one has. It’s new, Frigg.” She nodded and buried her head in her hands. “If he’s not a Corsair, then what is he?”
I'm not sure if this would really be a spoiler so I'll mark it as such. But we still haven't really answered this question. The depth of figuring out just what Iro is and who he comes from gets more intriging!
“Wait. What?” Iro said, staring after Eir as she waltzed away. She didn’t reply. His ears were burning as he turned back to the door in front of him. Inside the quarters, standing with her arms crossed inside the kitchen area, was an older woman. She was tall, slim, with blonde hair starting to grey, and she looked furious. “Inside. Now,” the woman growled. Iro didn’t hesitate. “Now shut the door so no one can hear you scream.”
The squad leader fixed him with a stare. “No one is expendable.” The silence held for a few seconds. Then Toshiko coughed. “Except Justice.” The squad leader tightened the straps of her shield around her forearm. “Except Justice,” she said. “Hey!” Justice leapt off the downed pod, but the squad leader was already striding away.
Something cold and wet dripped down the back of her neck, ran under her armor and trickled down her spine. She shivered. “Ew ew ew ew ew!” She started hurrying down the steps, unwilling to be dripped on any further. “Don’t rush,” Steel Lotus said. “You might fall.” “Shut up,” Toshiko said. “You’re made of metal. You don’t care. But water dripping down on me is just… argh!” She kept imagining the drips weren’t water, but little monsters; slithering things like wires, but alive.
