Smiling, he offered it to her – the heart of a wraith. ‘I considered flowers, but I thought you’d like this more…’
‘The person who gave it to her was someone she had been very fond of long ago… For whatever reason, they too had needed to leave, and had told her… Sometimes, to love someone, we have to let them go. ‘Talemir,’ Drue said, touching his sword arm. ‘I can defend myself.’ ‘That’s not the point,’ Talemir ground out, squeezing Coltan’s throat. The ranger’s eyes bulged in his head. ‘You shouldn’t have to.’ Coltan clawed at his hand, his feet kicking out at Talemir in panic. ‘You’re killing him,’ Drue pointed out. ‘Good.’
‘You would have killed him,’ she commented. ‘Without hesitation.’ ‘But you didn’t… Why?’ ‘You didn’t want me to.’ ‘It’s that simple?’ She raised a brow at him. ‘Just like that, a mighty Warsword is mine to command?’
Wilder swore. ‘And what about me? You’d abandon your apprentice?’ Talemir smiled sadly. ‘You haven’t been my apprentice for a long time, my brother.’ He reached for the jewel around his neck and pulled it free, closing the gap between himself and his protégé and pressing it into Wilder’s palm. ‘I promise you will understand one day. And when you do, you’ll know who to give this to.’
