He had been a hero once. Now, he was cursed with the half-life of a shadow wraith.
‘Warswords are not born. They’re forged with blood and steel,’ he said. ‘But you earned that badge of honour long ago.’
Smiling, he offered it to her – the heart of a wraith. ‘I considered flowers, but I thought you’d like this more…’
‘It’s about a maiden who falls in love with a beast.’ Her throat bobbed as she carefully thumbed its pages. ‘Wishful thinking?’ Talemir didn’t move. ‘You tell me.’ ‘I’m no maiden,’ she said quietly. ‘But I’ll wager there have been plenty who have fallen in love with you.’ ‘I’m not concerned with others.’
‘I… I saw that bastard go after you, and after that… Well, I killed them without a second thought. All I could think of was if he got his hands on you —’
‘I’ve been thinking about what you said…’ she ventured. Another slow smile spread across Talemir’s lips. ‘Have you now?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘And?’ Drue stood on her tip-toes, leaning in so that her breath mingled with his. ‘And I want you to do those things. I want you.’ Talemir went incredibly still. She wasn’t sure he was breathing, but his eyes were ablaze with desire. ‘Are you sure? Even with everything you know? Everything you’ve seen?’ ‘I like what I’ve seen,’
‘Touch her again,’ he said, leaning in, crushing Coltan to the wall behind him, ensuring the punishing grip mirrored his words. ‘And you die.’
‘How did I find you?’ he murmured. ‘How did this happen…?’ He trailed off, words failing him this time. Drue traced the curve of his shoulders lightly. ‘I believe I tried to kill you.’
As Drue kissed Talemir, slowly and thoroughly, he realised that. He loved her and all that she was. And what she was… was everything.
‘Because I’m in love with you.’
Then, Drue was there, bruised and bloodied, soot staining her cheek, more beautiful than he’d ever seen her before. Talemir dropped the reaper’s heart on the burnt ground and pulled the fierce ranger into his arms. Forgetting everything else, he kissed her. It was a kiss that started the world anew.
‘The darkness took a lot from me…’ Drue kissed him soundly, desire already reawakening within. ‘But it also gave me you.’
‘You haven’t been my apprentice for a long time, my brother.’ He reached for the jewel around his neck and pulled it free, closing the gap between himself and his protégé and pressing it into Wilder’s palm. ‘I promise you will understand one day. And when you do, you’ll know who to give this to.’
