In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.
This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.
Still it is probable that Bilbo, her only son, although he looked and behaved exactly like a second edition of his solid and comfortable father, got something a bit queer in his make-up
“What do you mean?” he said. “Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?” “All of them at once,” said Bilbo. “And a very fine morning for a pipe of tobacco out of doors,
He had a horrible thought that the cakes might run short, and then he—as the host: he knew his duty and stuck to it however painful—he might have to go without.
There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself.
“It seems a great big hole to me,” squeaked Bilbo (who had no experience of dragons and only of hobbit-holes).
He put the ring in his pocket almost without thinking; certainly it did not seem of any particular use at the moment.
he had been more lucky than he had guessed.
You are familiar with Thorin’s style on important occasions, so I will not give you any more of it, though he went on a good deal longer than this.
His rage passes description—the sort of rage that is only seen when rich folk that have more than they can enjoy suddenly lose something that they have long had but have never before used or wanted.
Already they had come to respect little Bilbo. Now he had become the real leader in their adventure.
when the heart of a dwarf, even the most respectable, is wakened by gold and by jewels, he grows suddenly bold, and he may become fierce.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
“If ever you are passing my way,” said Bilbo, “don’t wait to knock! Tea is at four; but any of you are welcome at any time!”
“So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending!” said Bilbo, and he turned his back on his adventure. The Tookish part was getting very tired, and the Baggins was daily getting stronger. “I wish now only to be in my own armchair!” he said.
