When the doctor returned for a check-up, he was forced to undo the stitches to check what was wrong – only to realize that a piece of bloody cloth had been left inside the new mother!
It is surreal to hear the stories of child birth from women in precarious living situations in South Asia and East Africa. My grand mother and mother had similar experiences. I know that I’m privileged to never experience the conditions they did, but their stories have deterred me from fantasizing about having children.
