It is surreal to hear the stories of child birth from women in precarious living situations in South Asia and East Africa. My grand mother and mother had similar experiences. I know that I’m privileged to never experience the conditions they did, but their stories have deterred me from fantasizing about having children.
Society tells us women aren’t supposed to be ambitious. A professional life is positioned as a luxury in a woman’s life, as though it is a perk or an allowance offered by the kindness of those around us. And if we feel within ourselves that we have something to offer to the world, we’re conditioned to feel guilty for it. I felt very strongly that I was doing important work, making my community better, using skills that I had. And given that I had such a supportive system at home to back me
was systemic laziness.
I understood that we were not lacking in facilities but in intent.
