MOST PEOPLE WOULD FIND being led into an underground bunker on a stormy night scary. Not me.
How do you know about 24601? I refuse to believe you read the book. You saw the musical, right?
Dimitri. His looks alone were certainly enough to make many halt in their tracks. He had dark brown hair pulled back into a short ponytail, with matching brown eyes that seemed mysterious and alluring. He was tall, too—about 6′7″—
He wiped sweat off his brow and somehow made that look attractive.
“Nice blouse, Sage,” he told me, deadpan. “It really brings out the khaki in your pants.”
Also, I couldn’t help but notice he smelled like coffee—
we caught a couple of spots where the actors messed up a line. We shot each other secret, triumphant looks, gleeful that we were in on something others didn’t know about.
The two of us had plenty to debate and analyze on the way back to Amberwood.
“YOU SHOOK HIS HAND?” Adrian asked incredulously.
“Really?” Adrian was still hung up on the end of my date. “His hand?”
If I’d wanted to shut them all up, I’d definitely succeeded.
Adrian spoke first. “I’m going to assume that means he’s flying you to Amsterdam on his private jet. If so, I’d like to come along.
“‘Cool,’” said Adrian. “‘Wind.’ I see what you did there, Sage. Pretty clever.”
He was as amazing to look at as ever, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, with a long leather duster over it all.
“Isn’t Dimitri hot?” Adrian’s response hadn’t been entirely unexpected: “Well, yeah, according to most women, at least.”
“Really? There’s something you can’t do?” Adrian’s
I saw something in those pretty eyes I’d never seen before: anger.
“Not when you keep pushing someone who wants to be left alone,”
Some distant part of me noticed that this was the first time I’d ever seen Adrian stand up to Dimitri.
when I looked at him, I saw… safety.
But Adrian understood.
none of the others had even noticed. Adrian had.
“No,” she said, a puzzled note in her voice. “He would have done it for you regardless.”
“You,” he said breathlessly. “Are amazing. Absolutely, positively, exquisitely amazing.” And then he kissed me.
What had just happened? That was my first kiss?
“Wait, wait,” said Trey. “You told… you told Brayden Cartwright he was wrong?” I nodded. “So why’d he react like he did?” Trey laughed, a big, full laugh that I was certain would draw Brayden back. “People don’t tell him he’s wrong.” “Yeah, I figured.” “And girls especially don’t tell him he’s wrong. You’re probably the only girl who’s ever done it. You’re probably the only girl smart enough to do it.”
And that’s when the next crazy thing happened. He held my hand.
He had nice hands.
There, I saw Adrian only inches away, watching me with amusement.
“I like that he’s smart,” I said. “I like that I don’t have to dumb myself down around him.”
Still, I had to do something—anything—to make Adrian feel better.
“The slush. That thing’s like 99 percent sugar. You just drank one, Sage.”
“Best thing that’s happened to me all day.
It still tingled and felt warm from where I’d touched his,
The sensation was fading the longer I drove, but I kind of wished it’d stay.
She punched him.
Angeline punched her too.
Dimitri. He used to be a combat instructor, and I could understand why.
Sonya gave him a sly smile. “And here I thought you had a soft spot for reckless young girls.” “Rose never would have done anything like that,” he countered. He paused to reconsider, and I could’ve sworn there was the hint of a smile there. “Well, at least not in such a public setting.”
We had just paid the check when Dimitri’s cell phone rang. “Hello?” he answered. And like that, his face transformed. That fierceness I so associated with him softened, and he practically glowed. “No, no. It’s always a good time for you to call, Roza.” Whatever the response on the other end was, it made him smile.
“Ah, those two. In a fight, they’re lethal. Around each other, they melt.”
It was Dimitri. I’d seen him fight before, but it never got old. He was captivating.
“Hey, you’ve got your turn-ons, I’ve got mine. Windmills for you, brawling for me.”
Ever think Clarence might be telling the truth? No. Until that moment, I hadn’t.
Rose wouldn’t need an escort, I thought. Even Angeline wouldn’t. She’d probably beat up a few pedestrians on the way, just to stay in practice.
“Oh, hey. Were you out with your boyfriend?” I winced. “Not sure I’d call him that yet.” “How many times have you gone out?” “Four.” “He’s taking you to the dance?” “I’m meeting him there.” She shrugged. “Sounds like a boyfriend to me.”
A TV and VHS player sat on a cart, along
Adrian flashed me a triumphant look.
