The only woman I’d ever loved was here—in a damned war zone—and she was wearing another man’s ring. She was going to be another man’s wife.
“I’ve always been afraid of flying. There’s something about it that just . . .”
“I mean statistically, we’re fine. The incident rate last year was one in 1.3 million, which was up from the year before, when it was one in 1.5 million. But, when you think about how many flights there are, I guess that’s not as bad as driving, since your odds of crashing are one in 103, but still, 828 people died last year, and I don’t want to be one of the 828.”
“I babble when I get nervous. And I have ADHD. And I didn’t take my medication this morning because I put it out on the counter next to my orange juice, but then Serena drank the juice, and I got sidetracked pouring more, and that pill is probably still sitting there—”
Bad boy or not, I knew Nate’s smile must have dropped its share of panties, because if we weren’t on this plane, I might have considered my first one-night stand.
“You even have the hot, broody reading vibe down. Very Jess Mariano of you.”
“Jess Mariano,”
“You know, from Gilmore Girls.”
“Well, if you ever do, just remember that you’re pretty much Jess, just . . . taller and hotter.”
The sight cooled the hottest flares of my frustration, and surprisingly, I fought a smile. It was just so . . . Izzy. If she stayed this flustered, she wouldn’t only fumble; she’d also start to babble.
“Just think. If this was a book, we’d be in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness, or the lone survivors, forced to share an abandoned cabin.”
“Don’t forget, it would be conveniently stocked with all the supplies we’d need.”
“As long as it isn’t yours.
“Please don’t pretend that you’re concerned about my welfare.”
“I have one weakness on this entire planet, and you’re feet away when you’re supposed to be halfway round the globe.”
“Your sister had to tell you that you were married?”
