Every time Gideon looked at the young heiress, she reminded him of the sea: steal-your-breath beautiful on the surface, with the promise of untold depths beneath.

A cold horror crept over Gideon as he forced himself to consider it. If Rune was the Crimson Moth, she was a master of disguise, and the only way to catch her was to play the same game she was playing.
I dont like that he figured it out this early in the book
It was Verity who started collecting her own blood and giving it to Rune in order to help her cast stronger spells.

Rune lowered her gaze. “Is it far? The place you have to bring her from, I mean.” She slowly unfastened the button of his shirt. He had the urge to pull her down into his lap. Focus, you idiot. “Not too far. She’s being held at the old mine near Seldom Harbor.”

“I told her the location of a holding cell for witches near Seldom Harbor.” “And that’s bad?” “There’s no holding cell near Seldom Harbor. Just a trap waiting for the Crimson Moth.”

Rune spun to grab the ladder and haul herself up, when a hand seized her wrist and clamped down with viselike strength. “Gotcha.”
Oh shit
He’ll be able to see me as soon as I come up for air, she realized, glancing at the bloody marks on her wrist, knowing the water would wash them away in moments. But what other choice did she have?

“What you’re describing is a happy ending. A fantasy.” She used his shoulders to steady herself as she hopped down from the chair. “And that’s great—for you. Not everyone gets to have that.”
Why is she so set on staying
He’d been the only person in that club to see Gideon as something more than a witch’s whore. He’d looked beneath the bruises, to the boy with nothing left to live for.

“Rune and I came with Alex tonight. He’s taking us both home.”
Shes leaving with him then
Rune might lie, but Alex wouldn’t. His brother would never knowingly sabotage him by aiding a dangerous witch. Not after everything their family had been through.

“Or,” he argued, “Rune isn’t a witch, and Cressida interceded to stop her from killing Seraphine.” “But you can’t know for certain which it is, can you? Not until you sleep with Rune and find her scars.”
Why is she so desperate for them to sleep together.

“Looks remarkably like Rune’s friend, don’t you think?” said Harrow. Verity de Wilde, she meant.

You literally just said you used her for sex and it wasnt even that good. Even if you didnt mean it you think anyone would look back

Once inside, Rune and Verity would use Gideon’s access coin to get past the seventh gate, telling the guards they had orders to bring Seraphine to her purging. They would retrieve Seraphine, usher her out of the palace prison, and bring her to Alex and the waiting horses.

Gideon waited for the bullet. Welcoming it. He hoped death would come swiftly. Except the bullet never came. When the gun went off, his brother stepped in front of it.

With his hand in her hair, Alex pulled her mouth down to his, kissing her one last time. Rune kissed back, that small spark flickering inside her. A spark that would never get the chance to grow into a steady flame. She kissed him until his chest fell and didn’t rise again beneath her palm. Until his last breath died on her lips.
