“Where?” “My home. I’ll keep you safe.” Pushing the hair from my face, he added, “Sleep, beautiful.”
I knew in that moment my instincts were right; Crowe would protect me.
“Ok, Princess. Just remember, I don’t need this to kill you.” “That’s fine, just so long as you remember that I don’t need pants to knee you in the balls.”
“What?” I said with an innocent shrug. “You are just full of surprises, is all. Seeing a man taking a knee to the dick shouldn’t have been hot, but fuck if that wasn’t the sexiest thing I’ve seen all night.”
“I know it’s probably hard to talk about, Darling, but we really need the full picture if we’re going to keep you safe. Niccolo will play nice. If he doesn’t, then I’ll shove my fist down his throat so he can’t speak.”
“You hurt her again, and it won’t be Thea ending up in pieces. I will fucking tear you apart.”
“I wouldn’t know what nice looks like,” I replied, not bothering to turn around. Low enough so that only I could hear him, Crowe whispered, “I’ll have to see what I can do about that.”
—Even in this state, you’re gorgeous.” Crowe dutifully closed his eyes.
“Strong, impossible to crush spirits do. Beneath those bruises, Thea, yes, it does it for me.”
“How could anyone do this to you—” The fingertips of his free hand ghosted over my throbbing side. “—when all I can think about is dropping to my knees in devotion?”
I moved behind her, pulling her hair back and kissing her neck just above the mark I had left. Our eyes met in the reflection. “You don’t get it. The fact that you went through this—” My hand skimmed over the dressings on her back, over the swell of her ass, and down to the bandages taped to her legs. “—and came out on the other side with fists still swinging is what makes you beautiful.” I placed a finger to her chin and turned her face to mine. “All of this—” I hovered a soft kiss over the suture tape on her cheekbone. “is temporary. Long after the bruises have faded, your fight will still

Dorothy was a fucking queen, looking to reclaim her kingdom in the name of everything she’d had stripped from her.
Death was never a rider on a pale horse. It was a woman bathed in firelight, her hair glowing a brutal shade of red that reminded me of the poppy fields of my childhood. Not the rainbow flowers of Oz, but the crimson ones of home.
I settled into the pillow, meeting Danny’s green eyes once more. “Sleep, Firecracker. You can go back to fighting the world in the morning, and when you wake up, I’ll be right here to fight it with you.”
I would give her that. Some men gave flowers. I would give my girl revenge.
There wasn’t a word large enough to explain how thoroughly ensnared I was. I’d laid for hours memorizing the slope of her nose, the long spray of lashes, the tiny freckles dusting the bridge of her nose like stars in the night sky. Everything about her was like she’d been sculpted, right down to the divot of her Cupid’s bow. She wasn’t just perfect. She was what perfection dreamed about when it closed its eyes. It made my soul ache just to look at her.
“If you don’t face your nightmares, then you’ll never banish them.”
He grabbed my arm, pulling me back down. “You don’t understand.” He cupped my cheek, forcing me to look at him. His emerald eyes bored into mine. “My thoughts, my desires, my dreams. They are all consumed by images of you, wanting you. The only person who owns anything right now is you.”
“I’d give every last bit of me to you freely, for the chance to hold a piece of you.”
“Then be careful of what you ask for because Thea, I will never deny you…anything.”
“Tu sei il mio unico limite.”
“Crowe is right about one thing—” Slowly, he dragged the zipper up. His lips pressed against the base of my neck, the static of his kiss making the tiny hairs stand on end. He barely touched me, and yet, I could feel his presence skating over my entire body. “You are absolutely gorgeous.”
“Then, make sure you cut deep, Princess, because I don’t give second chances."
“Love is a sickness—a disease that makes you blind, weak, and reckless. Put a little pressure on the right pretty face, and I’ll give you a front row seat to watching them dance.”
