But for the most part, I never really experienced any negative feelings associated with culture shock. I seemed to skip Phase 2 and spent my two years in a continuous state of excitement and fascination, whilst at the same time feeling comfortable in my surroundings. This brief period of annoyance with the locals’ stares was the closest I got to the downside of living in rural Japan.
