So in July 2004, I took one last look over London as the plane wheeled away from the capital and soared towards Japan, where I hoped I might find something more. And I did find more. The two-year adventure saw me tumble into love with a forgotten nook of Japan:
I would never return to the lab. Japan would ultimately change my career path completely, and as for those next two years, the question ‘is this really it?’ never once entered my mind.
But for the most part, I never really experienced any negative feelings associated with culture shock. I seemed to skip Phase 2 and spent my two years in a continuous state of excitement and fascination, whilst at the same time feeling comfortable in my surroundings. This brief period of annoyance with the locals’ stares was the closest I got to the downside of living in rural Japan.
