“I prepared food for you. A gourmet meal. Come and eat with me, Avery.”
“I’m not hungry, and I’m still mad at you.”
“You haven’t had anything since this morning. You can be mad at me while you eat, just open th...

Her emotions were a tangled mess she hadn’t yet unraveled.
“Avery?” Another pause. “I searched the internet. I will not tolerate this silent treatment any longer.”
She grinned. She could picture him frowning over a computer, typing why won’t my female speak to me into a search bar with the tips of his claws.
“I was just speaking to you,” she said, running her fingers through Beau’s fur. “So this is obviously no longer the silent treatment. But ...

“Done asking.”
“I’m not hungry!” “But I am,”
“Been hungry for you since I first saw you.”
“Dang it, Fyran, put me down!”
Oh God, now I’m starting to sound like my mother. I’m going to be sick.
Did you forget what he did? Oh shush. I’m still conflicted on that.
“But you make me want those things. You make me want to learn. You make me want to live, vaerina. I don’t have a home, but karak’duun, I want nothing more than to make one with you.”
Avery’s eyes flared, and her heart quickened at Fyran’s words. And oh God, were they the right words.
“Came down here to eat, not listen to me talk.” Avery snorted. “It wasn’t like I came by choice.”
“I’m not talking to you. I have a call to make.” “I’m not stopping you.” “Don’t you have something better to do?”
“You.”
Ignore him. Stop looking—no,
and ignore him.
“You’re mine, vaerina. And I am yours. All that I am, for better or worse…I belong to you.”
“Yeah, well…he can go mean well somewhere else. I’ve got you covered.”
“I think it’s about…hope. And selflessness. About being close to the people you love and giving them gifts not because you want something in return, but because you want to see them happy. About making traditions that you share with the people closest to you.”
“I’m familiar with the silent treatment, but what is this cold shoulder nonsense?”
He would father her child, and together they would make a family. The family neither of them had ever had. He would fucking make sure of it.
“Say my name again, vaerina. Scream it.”
“I claim you, Avery,”
“I’m yours,” she rasped against his mouth. “I’ve always been yours.”
“Damn right you fucking are, vaerina.”
“You’re fucking mine, vaerina,”
“So fucking beautiful, and all fucking mine.”
“Who do you belong to, Avery?” “You.”
“Say my fucking name, vaerina.”
“Ah, my Avery,” he purred, stroking his thumb along her jaw. “I will never let you go.”
Someone who loved her.
She’d just have to get her mind off sex by working on her book.
Yeah, because writing romance is a great way to stop thinking about sex.
“I will never have enough of you. I will never be satisfied. I’ll hunger for you always, female.”
“I’ve never been this happy before either,”
“And it’s because I have you, Avery.”
“I’ve never known anyone who could be so vulgar and romantic at the same time.”
“I am tired of hearing your insults,” Avery said. “So tired of hearing how miserably I’ve failed to meet your every expectation.”
“Avery is the most beautiful person I’ve ever known. She’s like the stars in the night sky, sparkling, constant, mesmerizing. She’s like the sun, fierce and fucking passionate, warm and welcoming. And she’s like the moon, quiet, calming, always smiling even when she hurts inside. She’s all that despite you. Your best fucking efforts couldn’t destroy her, because she’s more than either of you could ever be. And she is mine.” He tossed the money onto the table. “Enjoy your fucking meal.”
She was still his Avery, but she was so much more. She was so much more herself.
“Nothing will harm what’s mine.”
